Elisabeth heard Edward and then waited for him to come in, still focused on cutting the carrots. As he walked inside at last, she wanted to speak but he was only concerned about Monica, so Liz kept silent, listening to him.

At his words she gripped the knife tighter. WHAT?! He... he couldn`t. Elisabeth couldn`t give her daughter up so soon. She hadn`t had enough time. And... to Ralston?? That was... insane. Monica would be a widow before her children would grow up.

She slowly turned to look at Edward, her eyes narrowed slightly. "Edward, but... Ralston? Why not any of his sons? Why... him?" she asked.

Edward glared at Elisabeth as she spoke. His face looked pretty tough. He knew she`d try to argue. So stupid of her. "Have any problems with that, Elisabeth?" he asked, his voice as cold as never before. No one was going to stop it.

"Not any of his sons, because they aren`t good enough." he answered in the same ice cold voice, his eyes stabbed at her.

Keeping his look on his wife for a few moments he looked down at Monica. "Oh yes, I can. I`ve dressed you, I fed you, I gave you a place to stay for twenty years. You are mine and I can do anything I want with you. And I can choose who you will marry. This is your obligation, daughter." he spoke in the same tone, letting them both know that there was no need of arguing.

"He`s not too old to fulfil his manly duty." he pointed out, keeping hsi eyes locked on Monica`s face. "Without me you`d be just a despicable tramp. Without this you have nothing. And you will marry him and you will be happy with him. Because he will be taking care of you and you won`t have to worry about money. You will be grateful when you see him, because he is saving you from death." he snarled out.

Monica listened to her father, fearing even to breathe that moment. She realized that there was no point to argue - he wouldn`t give up. And she was scared to argue. And... well, his words did make sense.

Glancing down at the table she nodded, feeling how tears blocked her throat. "Yes, father." she whispered, no breath in her lungs. How this was possible?

She wasn`t ready for marriage. She wasn`t ready to marry someone who she didn`t even know well, who was clearly too old for her. So, she just kept her eyes stabbed at the table, putting all self control on not bursting to tears. After all... her father knew better.

In some sense, he was right. It was time for her to leave her parent`s home, but where would she go? She had nothing.

Elisabeth swallowed as Edward spoke to her. He was being dead serious. She shuddered at the coldness of his voice as he addressed her. It was her plan to get Monica married, but... not so soon, not to such man.

But if this had to happen, it had to. Elisabeth wouldn`t stand in a way of it. She knew it had to be done, she just didn`t like the way it was going to be done.

"No, Edward." she answered him. "I`m perfectly fine with it. I`m glad that Ralston is doing this." she spoke emotionlessly.

Edward kept the cold face on, until both of them agreed. Fine. Then this was over now. Their biggest concern was to make sure that Monica wouldn`t run away until the marriage. After it... well, he was damn sure that Ralston could keep Monica and not let her leave.

"I`ve expected nothing less." he said to Elisabeth. "You will plan the wedding. Sonner the better. Make sure that only decent people are invited." he said, before turning around and leaving. There was nothing else for him to do there.

An owl from the Marrid Mansion flew into the kitchen and landed in front of Monica, and much like its owner, the bird looked extremely ill tempered. It held out a leg with a package on it.

To my dearest Monica,

I hope this ring will show you my love and devotion to you, wear it as a symbol to us.

Ralston.

Truth was, Ralston had Serin pick out the |ring| because he had the younger man in the palm of his hand, and one of his sons wrote that sappy crap.... Ralston couldn't care less about showing affection to anyone but Leo.

Monica was about to break down when the owl flew in and landed in front of her. She was pretty afraid to see what was in the package. Untying it from the owl, she took it, realizing that not only her fingers, but her hands were trembling.

It took her quite a bit to open the package. The ring rolled out and she felt how tears gripped her throat again. She couldn`t cry, what if her father would see it?

And yet the next thing she realized, she was crying as her eyes ran through the short note. Love??!! He didn`t even know her. She put her trembling hands on the table and gripped them together, pleading that it would stop. She couldn`t be weak. If she had to, she would marry Ralston, because her parents said so. But still... this wasn`t fair.

Elisabeth had turned back to the counter, as Edward left. She did feel sorry for her daughter, but she knew that this was the best for her. She`d be a decent Pureblood. She`d be someone who Elisabeth always wanted to be and was at last - nobility. This was only right.

And then she heard a short gasp, some silent cling. Turning to the table she noticed everything - from the owl to the ring. Seeing that Monica was crying did grip her heart, but she didn`t let the feelings get to her.

"Put it on." she ordered simply, keeping her voice firm. "And clean yourself up. You look like a mess." she said, right before placing the knife down and moving to the door. She needed to find one thing. If it was going to be Ralston... well, then he should have it. A premature wedding gift.

Monica heard her mother`s voice and she really tried hard to just stop herself from crying. Which was much harder than she thought it would be. Placing the note down, her trembling fingers took the ring, almost dropping it. It looked expensive as hell. At least as much as she could see through her tears.

Slipping it on her finger she shuddered. Will she only see this Ralston man only on the wedding day? It all felt horrible. But her parents said it would be the best... and she had no choice but to go along with it.

Standing up, feeling pretty sick, she moved to the sink and turned the water on. Then splashed it on her face. She had to obey. Because... there was simply no other way for her.

Monica walked down the stairs and went to the kitchen. The idea of getting married… well, she hated it, but what could she actually do? So, she just let go of it all and gave in. Did it matter? No one was there to take her away.

She grabbed an apple and sat down. The Daily Prophet was lying on the table and she took it, biting the apple and chewing it slowly. Maybe she was being foolish for putting up with her parents. But she had done that for all of her life and she didn`t even know how could she not.

Still, the empty feeling wouldn`t go away. She felt it over and over again. As if there was a part of her that disappeared. And the image of the ring… that one haunted her as well. She couldn`t remember where she had seen the ring before. Neither could she remember IF she had seen it before. It was stupid.

Her eyes ran through the words, but her mind couldn`t register what she was reading. Some… Inner Circle Death Eater killed. Not that she cared much, actually. It was just something to do and she was slightly bored. Taking one more bite she turned the page over. And her heart froze.

She knew that face. She knew that face and that brought her pain, for some reason. Moreover she did not only know him – she knew him good. She knew those eyes, lips and hair… and she could remember the smell of his skin. Something like red peppers and rain.

Her jaw clenched as she tensed up. Pain rushed over her and she still couldn`t say why. All what she knew was that she knew this man. And that he was much more than an Inner Circle Death Eater.

You don`t know how much I want you... A voice rang in her head and it took her a minute to realize that it was her voice. Her words said to him. And now she wasn`t breathing for quite long. She couldn`t. She didn`t.

Flashes of images came to her mind. Them kissing... them being together... Her eyes rushed through the article again and then stopped at the name. Malius Raziel. Monica stared at the name for few moments. Then stared for some more.

Finally she let herself to breathe. But instead she chocked on the piece of the apple which was still in her throat. Now she wasn`t able to breathe. Starting coughing she dropped the newspaper and it fell on the ground, opening on the page with a picture of Malius.

Still coughing she launched at the sink and turned the tap on, letting the water pour. Dear Merlin, she thought she was going to die right there. But thankfully she took a big gulp of water and swallowed the apple. Then just continued to stare at the stream, her eyes wide.

Images kept flashing before her eyes. And it was as real as everything around her. And she knew it happened. She just didn`t know why, or how could she forget it? Her body shivered when a sudden wave of feelings crashed her. Remembrance, lust, sadness... love. She leaned on the sink, looking for support. She loved that man. She just so honestly, so purely and so strongly loved him that she got goose-bumps.

But then it stroke her – he was dead. He was killed. Malius was... he was actually dead. Her mouth opened as she couldn’t even express the pain she felt. It felt like everything inside her was being poisoned and now suffered a slow death. Her body tensed up and she couldn`t even blink – that was how much it hurt.

Suddenly Monica`s body went limp and she couldn`t hold on anymore. Slowly, very silently she slipped down to the floor, feeling how everything around her crashed and crumpled. How could have this happened? Why this had to happen? The hole that she was feeling before now was filled. Yet it was filled with the unbelievable pain that she was feeling. She couldn`t even cry, she couldn`t move. She just sobbed with no tears, her mouth still open, and her throat aching with every gasp that she made.

And she kept sitting there, afraid to even move. Her body trembled once more. She inhaled, the breath getting locked up somewhere in her lungs. One more painful, tearless wail. There were no tears to cry. All what she could do was sit there and suffocate on her own feelings. He was dead and she... she wasn`t sure she could cope with it in any possible way.
